Theme 1 Research 3 Andrea Massari

My 3rd choice of person for research is Andrea Massari.

Andrea Massari was born in Rome in 1974, But then spent his childhood in Sao Paulo. The most influential elements in his work (in his words) are Nature, Sun and Simplicity.
He has 2 sides, a Painter and Photographer, His painting is influenced by people such as Matisse, Picasso, Lichtienstien to name a few.
The photographer in him, he classes as a taint, and uses amongst others Sieff and Avedon to influence his own creative expression.
He has a great passion for details, and spends time getting the right, to add that little bit extra to his images.
Looking on his website he seems to have an almost even variation on both Colour and Black and White images.

This is the 1st image of his that I have chosen, the main focal point of this image is the seated man, but then your instantly drawn to the walking man, as the seated man is watching him go by, which is probably part of the Connotation/Denotation, how one man can live in a big city, Probably with money, a roof over his head and still have time to watch the poor homeless guy move to a new "patch" in the city after probably having been moved on from his last place, and those being just a couple of different ways people live in big cities.
The Composition is fairly simple, the background being the buildings, and then the 2 subjects, one middle frame and one foreground, I don't think the shot was set up, more Andrea was probably taking photo's of the guy sat down, when the homeless guy walked past and probably didn't even look at either the photographer or model, and when the models gaze followed the homeless man, Andrea took a sneaky yet very effective shot.
For a Black and White shot, there is a varied and fairly wide Tonal range of shades, whites, blacks, numerous greys.
Quite a wide frame to the image, might of been doing a wide shot, and going for a 2/3's frame of just the seated man to start with, or maybe adjusted and framed it this way when the homeless man walked through.

This image is completely different form the last, to start it's in colour, it has a lot more movement coming from the jumping man, and just one subject in it not 2.
The range of colours in the image is pretty wide, Purple, light Blue/Turquoise, Black, White, Orangery Brown, Yellow, Gold etc.
The background is definitely more busy, and this makes the composition more complicated, But I think this was needed, as I think the Connotation/Denotation is of freedom and expressionism's that can be found/had even in a busy confined space, like the big city.
Due to the man being in brightly coloured clothes on the not so brightly coloured background, and with him doing an unusual pose, he become the main focal point of the image, and also his position within the image makes this a definite use of the rule of  two thirds.

This image is closely framed on the model to make her the main focal point, more specifically her face and the hat are where your eyes are initially drawn, this is helped by her hands being on her head.
For a black and white image there is quite a good tonal range, with whites, blacks and various shades of grey. I would say the Contrast level is quite high, the models face is a very bright white, the darkest area on the shirt is also quite light for saying it was probably a dark blue.

This is a nice colour image, it has many different colours, mainly coming from the top that the model is wearing.
The pose compared to most model shots is very different, however the way the model cuts diagonally through the image helps to make sure she remains the focal point, yet allowing the image to have a wider fame, allowing more of the background to been seen.
The depth of field is quite shallow, the model in the foreground is nicely in focus, yet the background has a nice slight out of focus to it. I also think there may have been some editing to the image,  the way the top left and bottom right corners have been blurred more than the rest of the background.

I would say that this image has used the rule of two thirds, with the model being offset to the right, this combined with the models orange/ginger hair really makes sure that the model, mainly her eye, is the main focal point.
The composition of the image is pretty simple, plain background and a model, who's hand is half covering her face.
The image is quite bright, with very little shadows to be seen, I would say the contrast is also more towards the high side.
The depth of field has been kept deep enough to allow the model and her arm that is slightly in front to all be in focus, however with the simple composition of this image this wouldn't have to be too deep, as the plain background wouldn't show either way.

This image is has a more complicated composition than the previous image. It's an overall darker image, although the contrast between the light and dark areas has a good balance, I think a reflector may have been used to help with this balance, as there is a bright spot on the models left arm and no shadow under her chin.
I think this was quite possibly an advertising shot, for either the clothing or jewellery that the model is wearing.

The depth of field has been kept deep enough to allow the background to be out of focus, but not a complete blur, the lamp and curtain for example are in just enough focus to be made out.

This image has a bright contrast, being black and white the only real dark areas are the models hair, underwear and shoes, even her skin which is grey in colour still has bright white areas.
The focal point to me is either the models underwear or hair, both of which are big areas of black and stand out from the bright image.
The framing of this has been made wide enough to get all the model in, cutting off just a little bit of her feet.

This image has a definite use of line, from the Horizontal lines on the left leading you into the image and the model, to the Vertical lines on the right of the model, also to a certain extent the outfit the model is wearing has lines in it as well.
The colour is mainly brown, using various shades of it, the only real deviation is, the models skin and hair and the hay bail.
It has been cropped wide to allow the lines on the left to lead you to the model, due to the model positioned more to the right of the image, it uses the rule of two thirds
The contrast of the image is fairly bright, the only real dark area/shadow is that being cast by the model on the back wall.
Due to the model being almost a part of the background rather than in the foreground, the depth of field has had to be kept fairly deep, to allow pretty much everything to be in focus, the only exception being the straw bail to the bottom left of the image.
The composition of the image is fairly simple with only really 3 parts to it, the walls, the model and the straw bail.

This image has a much more complicated Composition than most of the other works I have looked at by Andrea. There are 2 models, about 5 props and various textures, then the structure with it's see through patches.
The focal point to me is the female model and red chair to the front left of the image, then you notice there is a second male model to the right rear of the image.
The range of colours has been kept limited, there are a lot of dark colours, browns, blacks and greys, with the chair and the females top being red so they stand out, helping them become the focal point.
The contrast I would say is middle range, there are no real highlighted areas, the only deep dark shadows are in the roof area to the top right corner.
I would say there is a connotation/Denotation of "Nature is destructive and can leave us with nothing" and maybe "we are nothing more than objects in life"

This is the final image I have chosen to look at from Andrea, It is a nice black and white image with a lot of grain in the image.
The depth of field has been kept really shallow, and had the model been stood still it would show more, however with her movement it gives an impression of it all being out of focus.
The image has a wide crop to allow the viewer to see the model is outside possibly running through a street.
The contrast is mid range, a nice deep black coat with plenty of grey and white areas in the background and models hair/face. With the combination of the coat being a big area of black and the position of the model, makes this the focal point of the image.
I would say the Connotation/denotation of this image could be of  "fear" as the model appears to be running away yet looking back over her shoulder, as if someone/something is following her.
